Fingerprint Access Control Is Secure And Reliable

Fingerprint access control is a very reliable biometric technology that relieson a unique physical characteristic to identify a person – their fingerprints.  This is vastly superior to conventional access control systems that had hitherto used credentials that are very easy to lose or steal: PINs, passwords and electronic proximity devices that require you to hold a card or chip close to a receiver.

Fingerprint access control circumvents those disadvantages by only requiring you to be there in person – simply press your finger against the fingerprint reader and the device will query the database and compare it to your stored fingerprints.  Usually two fingerprints are stored and if a positive identification is made, the system will release the electromechanical door lock or turnstile.

Many systems available

There are many fingerprint access control systems available today from suppliers like Lenel and Sagem and your choice would depend on your type of application.  Certain models are totally weather-resistant and are typically used at outdoor boom gates where employees entering the premises by car have to identify themselves before the boom gate is opened.  These locations are usually also fitted with CCTV cameras to keep track of car registration numbers.

Other fingerprint access control systems are entirely portable and once the application has been installed on a computer, the portable unit can accompany it.  The fingerprint reader is usually attached to the computer via a USB cable and the fingerprint database will reside on the computer.

The cost advantage

The biggest advantage of a fingerprint access control system is that it is the most affordable of all the biometric access control systems.  Its widespread use has meant that the technology is no longer expensive and many smaller companies now employ fingerprint readers for both access control and time-and-attendance systems.  Of course, the other biometric options remain, like systems identifying people by their hand geometries, retinas, irises or voices.  Contact us today for more information.
